Cheating the Hog- an evening w/the author
Lewis & Clark Library, 7pm
More Details
About Cheating the Hog: Echo needs a miracle. She’s turning fifty, lives with her gun-toting mom, and her lover’s been killed in a logging truck accident. She made front page news as a Salvation Army bell ringer, but that job ended and she’s digging for change to pay off a gambling debt.
The local sawmill hires her to do cleanup and odd jobs, like ‘cheating the hog’. But on the first day on the job she realizes this job could kill her. When tragedy does strike, she leads the other women mill workers to fight back…earning her respect on the job and the attention of a strong-hearted man.
Rae Ellen Lee was raised on a stump ranch in Idaho before moving to Butte, Montana. She received a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Idaho with which she worked for the US Forest Service designing clearcuts to look like natural clearings. After traveling around the US and Caribbean, Lee has settled in Bellingham, Washington. She is the author of four books: I Only Cuss When I’m Sailing, My Next Husband Will Be Normal, The Bluebird House and Cheating the Hog.

Center for Mental Health Foundation Fundraiser
Family Fun ~ Food ~ Prizes
The 3rd Annual Carnival fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, to generate funds for its Montana House day treatment client activity account and Our Place Drop-In Center. MT House is located downtown at 900 N. Jackson in Helena.
The Helena business community can support us through sponsorships or by donating prizes for the raffle drawings.
The MT House will offer a barbecue hamburger and hotdog lunch available for $5 per plate. Last year, funds were raised for the Lewis and Clark County Humane Society by hosting a dog wash from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also, dogs for adoption were present in hopes of finding a home.
Revenue generated from the MT House Annual Carnival helps fund recreational activities (camping, parties and community outings), and other program needs. Mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and PTSD are common among the people MT House serves. Social isolation and lack of self-confidence are some of the biggest barriers for people with mental illnesses. The MT House is where consumers come to feel connected, socialize in a supportive environment and to explore the skill building opportunities for a better life.
For more information, call Janette Clark at 443-7151, ext. 1450. Find Center for Mental Health Foundation on Facebook.

How To Play Cribbage
Lewis & Clark Library, 7pm
More Details
Helena Cribbage Club #25 invites you to learn how to play one of the most popular games in the English speaking world!
Cribbage is a card game that is played with a deck of standard playing cards and a signature piece of equipment called the Cribbage Board.
According to John Aubrey, cribbage was created by the English poet Sir John Suckling in the early 17th century, as a derivation of the game "noddy”. While noddy has disappeared, crib has survived, virtually unchanged. The objective of the game is to be the first player to score a target number of points, typically 61 or 121. Points are scored for card combinations that add up to fifteen, and for pairs, triples, quadruples, runs, and flushes.
Cribbage holds a special place among American submariners, serving as an "official" pastime. The wardroom of the oldest active submarine in the United States Pacific Fleet carries World War II submarine commander and Medal of Honor recipient RADM Dick O'Kane's personal cribbage board on board, and upon decommissioning it is transferred to the next oldest boat

2nd Annual Zombie Escape Run
Lewis & Clark Fairgrounds, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
More Details
The Zombie Escape Run is an obstacle course fun run with a twist - zombies roam the course trying to remove the flags from flag football-type belts runners wear. If a runner crosses the finish line with @ least one flag remaining, they have survived the zombie apocalypse! While zombie-themed runs are currently popping up all over the U.S., to our knowledge this is the only run of its kind in Montana.
We are planning a wave of the run for women only and one for military only,. |

Set in a small southern beauty parlor with a colorful cast of gossips, the play is alternately hilarious and touching. Truvy’s beauty salon is where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter Shelby is about to get married. Filled with hilarious repartee which gives the play, and it’s characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company. |

Leave your troubles behind and enter the Kit Kat Klub, a world where “everything is beautiful.” Set against the decadence of Berlin in the 1930s, Cabaret has become one of the most powerful and popular musicals of our time. From the writers of Chicago, this musical will sweep you away with such well known classics; “Maybe This Time,” “Willkommen,” and “Tomorrow Belongs To Me.” Pushing the boundaries of what musical theatre is capable of, this contemporary classic asks the question; “what good is sitting all alone in your room … come hear the music play.” |

As they begin to experiment with harmless games, their real offstage lives gradually infiltrate the classroom, revealing insights and transformations both humorous and heartbreaking. Winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best Play, this is an interesting and comedic look at how the intimacy of an acting class has the power to shape lives in surprising and substantial ways. |

Light a Life
Helena Civic Center, 4:30pm

Honor and remember your loved ones with a light on the Hospice Tree at the Helena Civic Center. To be listed at the ceremony, donations must be received by December 6th. Every gift will light one light for someone special and every night throughout the holidays thousands of lights will shine in honor of loved ones while continuing to provide Hospice care to the community.
A brief indoor candle lighting ceremony will take place in the ballroom to honor the names of all those for whom lights have been given, and then the 80-foot tall evergreen in front of the Civic Center will be lit.
Light a Life is the only fund-raising event for Hospice of St. Peter’s. Hospice helps make the lives of the terminally ill as full, comfortable, and meaningful as possible.
To make your contribution to Lite a Life, click here, or send a check in the amount of $10 for each person to be honored. Please provide who the gift is in memory of or in honor of and to whom you would like a card of notification sent.
